"I Was Young Once" by Debbie Singh

Title- We thought that “I Was Young Once” was about a poem from the perspective of old person or tree. We also thought the poem would be about when the narrator was young and the best moments of its life.

Paraphrase-  The poem is a piece of land in its youth before it was destroyed by man. It was loved life as it is and was enjoyed by many families before for centuries. All until metal monsters destroyed the trees and buried the narrator never to be free. It was made into a shopping center and it knows that years later greyness will erase it to the ground.

Connotation - young, lush, enjoyed, torture, and destroyed. We chose these words because it expresses the way the narrator was feeling about its life.

Attitude- The poem started as a nice peaceful piece of land living its best life then shifts to betrayal when it is trampled over and destroyed by mankind.

Shift -  The shift occurs after the 16th stanza where the poem goes from a light-hearted poem to a depressing demise of nature.

Title -  “I Was Young Once” is about the destruction of nature and the narrator thinking about it’s life before it was taken about by humans without them realizing it.

Theme - The theme of this poem our actions can be more impactful than we really think.
